Federation’s 2018 campaign kickoff will be held at the Powelton Club in Newburgh New York. This yearly event celebrates our loyal donors and volunteers and honors individuals who have made a difference in the Jewish Community of Orange County. The event will take place on Sunday, October 22nd from 3-5PM. A light meal will be catered by Itai Azulay of Sova Kosher Caterers.

We are excited to announce that Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney will be our featured speaker. Born in Quebec, and raised in nearby Hanover, New Hampshire, he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia. He entered politics as a volunteer for Bill Clinton's presidential campaigns, and later served as his senior West Wing adviser and White House Staff   Secretary. After the Clinton Administration, he served as the First Deputy Secretary to New York Governors Eliot Spitzer and David Paterson.

The event will feature a performance by the Hudson Opera Theatre String Quartet. Their selections will include music composed and originally performed during WWII in the Jewish concentration camp in Terezin, in occupied Czechoslovakia.

Our honorees for this event have worked diligently and generously on behalf of our Jewish community.

Joan & Joe Birnbaum  have lived in Monroe since 1954, where Joe set up an optometry practice and together they parented three wonderful children who gifted them with six grandsons. Joe became the Monroe Temple President and a life member of the board. Joan served as the Temple treasurer for 17 years and holds a position as a honorary life member of the board. The Birnbaums have been members of Federation since its inception where Joe went on to become the President and is now a Life Member of the Federation Board. The Birnbaums feel fortunate to have raised their family in a spiritually inviting, and vital Jewish environment and feel blessed that their six grandsons were the beneficiaries of their parent’s
exposure to the warmth and vitality of the Jewish community their grandparents helped create.

Abbe and Joe Distelburger  reside in Goshen and are Associate Brokers at Keller Williams Realty, where Joe is a partner. He is also President of Distelburger Livestock Sales.  Fleeing Nazi Germany in 1938, Joe’s parents settled in Middletown, joined Temple Sinai and became an integral part of the Jewish community. Abbe grew up in Baltimore and moved to Orange County when she married Joe. Both their parents instilled a strong sense of tradition and Jewish community involvement. They are proud that they have successfully transmitted that commitment and passion for Judaism to their children, Eric, an attorney at Jones Day in NYC and Betsy, a Physician’s Assistant at Mt. Sinai. Joe is a member of  numerous committees at Temple Sinai, having served 2 terms as president there. He has served as a volunteer for Federation in many capacities. Abbe joined the Board of Federation in 2002  and has served in many capacities, including secretary, Vice President and President of the Board.

Susan and George Levy  arrived in Newburgh in 1983, when George joined Finkelstein & Partners, where he is now a senior trial partner. They immediately became active in the Jewish community, always quick to volunteer in any capacity. George has been training volunteers for over 25 years while Susan raises funds at Federation’s yearly Super Sunday event. George served two terms as President of Temple Beth Jacob and continues to lend his musical talent to services. Susan also served as President of TBJ, was involved in the operation of their Judaica shop and Co-President of Noar Hadassah. George serves on the Board of the Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra and continues as the voiceover talent for Jacoby & Meyers and Finklestein & Partners. Susan and George have two children and three grandchildren. Their daughter Allyson, an independent radio promoter, is  married to Joshua Greenstein who is VP of the Israeli Wine Producers Association. Their son Ross is Director of Youth Engagement at Main Line Reform Temple in Philadelphia and is married to
Cantor Amy Levy.

For more than 40 years, Federation has been meeting the needs of the community. With our donors’ partnership we will continue to ensure a vibrant future for our children and our children’s children. In dozens of ways, your gift will work to strengthen Jewish life in Orange County, Israel, and over 70 countries. Your donation can help a child build the foundation of a lifelong identity at Jewish summer camp. You can help us to work to fight growing Anti-Semitism and intolerance. And you can make sure our youth stay connected to their heritage and to Israel.

Donors who commit to a $500 pledge for 2018 are invited to attend. Please RSVP to by October 16th.
